Nguyen Van Xuong, chief of police at the Song Than Industrial Park in the southern province of Binh Duong province, said workers at the Hansoll Vina plant had been on strike since Monday.

"The workers haven't destroyed anything, they are just protesting peacefully, so we don't have to take any action against them," Xuong said.

The Tien Phong newspaper reported that workers said the company forced them to work up to 18 hours per day and did not feed them.

On Monday, the company agreed to reduce working hours and increase overtime bonuses from 50,000 dong (2.7 dollars) to 150,000 dong per month. Workers rejected the offer.

A senior executive at the company refused to comment.
