Presiding Judge Nguyen Ngoc Chung said the four men were convicted of throwing rocks and bricks at police, injuring 20 people last July. They were given two to four years behind bars at Wednesday's one-day trial in Bac Giang city.

State media have reported a 21-year-old man was beaten to death by police after being stopped for not wearing a motorbike helmet. Thousands of angry people stormed a government building, throwing rocks and blocking traffic with his coffin.

Chung said Thursday six other villagers received suspended sentences of up to 2 years on the same charges.
