Le Nguyen Huong Tra, 35, who blogged as Co Gai Do Long, was detained last October and faced prison if convicted, on allegations that she criticised a security official and his family.

She was released on bail in January but the investigation has now been dropped, the state-controlled VnExpress news website said, citing police and prosecutors.

"Tra's behaviour has been considered less serious, so she only needs to be educated and warned," the site reported.

The blogger "had written several entries criticising a state official and his family for their patronage of some showbiz beauties," the state Vietnam News said after her arrest.

She had been accused under the Penal Code of "abusing democratic freedoms" by posting incorrect entries about the family of Nguyen Khanh Toan, deputy minister of public security, Tuoi Tre newspaper added, citing investigators.

The press freedom watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned Tra's arrest, calling it "the latest episode in a mounting crackdown on bloggers" ahead of the Communist Party Congress that took place in January.
