My Quyen, or Bo, Vietnam’s most famous female DJ, passed away at 30 on Sunday at a local hospital while touring in Hai Phong city.
DJ Phat, Quyen’s former instructor and boyfriend of 7 years, said Quyen suffered from severe coughing before the Northern tour, but she refused to see a doctor.
Her symptoms worsened in the cold weather after she arrived in the city and the DJ had to use sleeping pills to get to sleep. Quyen was later found unconscious and brought to a hospital but died of acute pneumonia.
Born in 1982, My Quyen started her career in the music entertainment industry 12 years ago and became known as one of the best and most famous female DJs in Vietnam.
Quyen topped the Vietnam DJ Talent Search in 2003, when she was the only female contestant among 28 professional disc jockeys from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. In 2004, she came second in the semi-final of the first Heineken Asian Young DJ Talent Search, held in Malaysia and Taiwan.
Also known for her beauty, sweet face and voice, Quyen was married to DJ Hoang Anh, another one of the top disc jockeys in Vietnam, and the pair have a 3-year-old daughter named Yuna.
The couple separated a year ago, and Yuna is living with her father.
My Quyen’s funeral will be held at Xa Loi Pagoda, Ba Huyen Thanh Quan in Ho ChiMinh, after which she will be cremated.
As her parents have yet to return from America, where they live, the funeral will be hosted by Quyen’s friends and colleagues.
