TAIPEI - Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) yesterday issued a strong protest against a newly adopted Vietnamese law that lays claim to two disputed island chains in the South China Sea, a MOFA official said yesterday.

Taiwan claims sovereignty over two archipelagoes in the South China Sea. They are the Spratlys and Pratas, with troops being stationed on an island of each archipelago. The Spratly Island where some 100 Coast Guardsmen are deployed is known as Taiping Island, or “Peace Island,” though it isn’t quite peaceful any more.

Hanoi - Police in southern Vietnam have detained 62 people on suspicion of impersonating officials to steal millions of dollars, authorities said Tuesday.
