Several days of heavy rain and storms have left at least 16 people dead in northern Vietnam, including 12 who were struck by lightning while working in rice fields, authorities said Sunday.

Hanoi - At least 19 people were killed and five were missing after heavy rains hit central Vietnam, bringing the death toll in October to 86, authorities said Monday.

Eight people were reportedly dead and missing in the torrential rains from Oct.1-3 in the central Vietnam.

United Nations relief officials are assisting recovery efforts after Typhoon Mirinae hit the Philippines and Vietnam, where the death toll from the storm rose to more than 120 people.
